(ECNS) -- The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases across the world has surpassed 2.4 million as of Sunday, with fatalities exceeding 165,000, according to the latest tally by Johns Hopkins University. The total cases in the United States topped 750,000, with the death toll at 40,661. The state of New York suffered the most cases of 247,815, as well as the highest death toll of 18,298. New Jersey recorded 85,301 cases and 4,362 deaths More than 1.12 million confirmed cases and nearly 100,000 deaths have been reported in Europe so far, according to the latest data from the World Health Organization. The pandemic is showing encouraging signs of abating in Europe, with continuous drop in the daily numbers of new deaths and new infections. (Read more) The Chinese mainland reported 12 more cases (8 imported) on Sunday, and the four domestic cases included three from Heilongjiang Province and one from Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, according to the National Health Commission. By April 19, there have been 82,747 cumulative infections, 77,084 recoveries, 4,632 deaths and 1,031 remaining infections in the Chinese mainland. Another 1,025 cumulative cases in Hong Kong, 45 in Macao and 420 in Taiwan have been reported.
