Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Carrie Lam Sunday called for an end of malicious release of personal information, warning its harm to the rule of law and social order. In a Facebook post, Lam said her personal information had been released online, which was not the first time, however, what worried her was doxxing's impact on the society in the form of social disintegration. In the last several months, a group of people rampantly doxxed government officials, police officers and other Hong Kong residents with different opinions. Those affected also include their families and even children. The Hong Kong police have become the major targets of these cyber attacks and even physical assaults amid the continued social unrest since June. "The only purpose of doxxing is to silence other voices," Lam said in the post, saying doxxing has been used as a weapon to harm others and their targets. Carrie Lam also appealed to the public to stay vigilant and do not let emotions get in the way of judgement. (With input from Xinhua News Agency) |
