Forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh battled with tribal fighters in Yemen's capital on Thursday during clashes that killed dozens as a US envoy flew around the region to stop the country plunging into outright civil war. Ferocious fighting in the streets of Sana'a has killed at least 135 people in the past 10 days calling into question the future of the troubled state, Reuters reported. Saleh has reneged on deals by regional leaders to secure a peaceful end to his 33 years in power. US envoy John Brennan left Saudi Arabia on Thursday for more talks on Yemen in the United Arab Emirates, a US official in Saudi Arabia said. He will seek the help of both leaders to pressure Saleh to accept the exit deal. The battles in Yemen are being fought on several fronts, with street fighting between tribal groups and Saleh's forces in Sana'a, popular protests across the country and a battle against Al Qaeda and Islamists militants who have seized a coastal city. Passengers said flights were suspended for several hours at Sana'a airport before it reopened in the afternoon. China's Ministry of Commerce on Thursday urged Chinese citizens and companies in Yemen to take caution due to the deteriorating safety situation in the country, according to the Xinhua News Agency. In a statement posted on its website, the ministry warned Chinese people not to travel to Yemen for the time being. Agencies |
