The US Army Corps of Engineers on Saturday opened a bay of a spillway in the state of Louisiana to protect some areas against severe flooding. "Protecting lives is the No. 1 thing we are looking for," Michael Walsh, president of the Mississippi River Commission, told reporters before opening the bay of the Morganza spillway to redirect water into other areas. The opening of the bay in Morganza, some 115 northwest of New Orleans, Louisiana, will lower water levels and reduce the possibility of severe flooding caused by things like overtopped levees and cracks in flood-control structures. More bays may be opened on Sunday and other gates could be opened later depending on water levels, according to officials. |
