Egypt's public prosecutor is considering moving ousted president Hosni Mubarak to a prison hospital pending health checks, his office said in a statement Thursday, AFP reported. Abdel Magid Mahmud Mahmud has ordered a medical team to head to Sharm el-Sheikh, where Mubarak is being detained in a hospital to "establish his latest health condition and the possibility of having him transferred to Tora prison or to the prison hospital," his office said. The prosecutor has also ordered that preparations be made at the hospital in Tora prison, in a southern suburb of Cairo. Mubarak's health is "unstable," the state news agency MENA reported Thursday, quoting a medical source in Sharm el-Sheikh. Mubarak is being held in connection with violence against protesters during 18 days of anti-regime rallies that ended his 30-year grip on power. He is also being questioned on corruption charges. His two sons, Alaa and Gamal, as well as several of his ministers and senior aides, are also being held in Tora prison on various charges as part of a sweeping probe into corruption and abuse. However, army sources said on Wednesday that the 82-year-old Mubarak wanted to remain where he is, according to Reuters. "Mubarak put in a request to the military council," an army source said, referring to the generals who took over from their former commander in chief. "He hopes they'll listen." Agencies |
