The organizers of the anti-government protests also staged a march of tens of thousands protesters to demand the immediate end to President Saleh's 33-year rule in Sanaa and other major provinces of Amran, Al-Hodayda, Ibb, Al-Bayda, Marib, Thamar, Taiz, Aden, Shabwa and Hadramout. They named the day "Friday of Last Chance," showing that Friday is the last chance to President Saleh to leave power. Eyewitnesses told Xinhua that large army and security forces packed the streets in downtown Sanaa to ensure the separation between the rival massive demonstrations. Saleh, who is facing months of street protesters across the country, has already admitted losing control of several provinces and warned of civil war and national split if he is forced to step aside. More than 120 demonstrators have been killed in clashes with security forces since late January. There are also fears that the violence could escalate as the majority of the country's 23 million people own guns. |
