One of India's most powerful tycoons, Ratan Tata, a confirmed bachelor, has spoken for the first time about his love life, revealing he dodged wedlock on a number of occasions. "When you asked whether I'd ever been in love, I came seriously close to getting married four times," the billionaire head of the $75-billion-revenue Tata Group told CNN in an interview that aired Thursday. "Each time it got close ... I guess I backed off in fear of one reason or another," Tata said. The 73-year-old is one of India's most prominent industrialists, but has always shunned the social limelight, leading a quiet life with his pet dogs in a book-filled flat in the financial hub, Mumbai. "In hindsight, when I look at the people involved – it wasn't a bad thing what I did. I think it may have been more complex had the marriage taken place," Tata said. While declining to name the women involved, Tata let slip a few details about one specific relationship he had in the 1960s. "I was working in the US and the only reason we didn't get married was that I came back to India and she was to follow me," he said. "But that was the year of the (1962) Indo-Chinese conflict. ... (It) was seen in the US as a major war between India and China, and so she didn't come and finally got married in the US," he said. He is to step down in December 2012 at the age of 75 and the question of who will succeed him has been the subject of intense speculation. He has confirmed that his half-brother, Noel Tata, is in the running to replace him as head of the giant conglomerate. The Tata Group is one of India's biggest business empires, embracing nearly 100 firms in sectors ranging from tea to steel. AFP |
