By Qiu Wei and Cheng Gang in Niigata The Chinese Consulate in Niigata has decided to ferry 60 Chinese nationals, including three expectant mothers, who remain within 30 kilometers of the Fukashima nuclear plant out of the radiation zone to safety, Shen Qingzhu, China's consul in Niigata, told the Global Times Wednesday. The consulate tried every means possible to reach Chinese citizens and notified them when and where the shuttle buses organized by the Japanese government for evacuees would arrive. Due to a lack of petrol, however, 60 Chinese nationals were unable to reach the assembly point by themselves. Since Japanese bus drivers are unwilling to go into the endangered area, the consulate officials will drive into the area by themselves to get the trapped nationals out and the buses will wait outside of the radiation zone. The rescue operation starts today, said the officials. Officials also told the Global Times that China Eastern Airlines has decided to add two more flights from Niigata to Shanghai each week to help Chinese nationals in Japan who have decided to return home after the earthquake. There are no four flights, each capable of carrying 250 passengers. The officials also suggested that Chinese nationals who have already evacuated the earthquake-hit zones should not return to the disaster areas for the time being. |
