US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ambassador Marc Grossman, began on Sunday his fist visit to Islamabad since his appointment as the regional envoy last month for talks on anti-terror cooperation, officials said. Grossman said at a news conference in Kabul on Saturday that the United States is committed to fighting terrorists in both countries. He visited Jeddah on Sunday, where he attended the International Contact Group (ICG) meeting and met with some senior government officials. "In his meeting, Ambassador Grossman will emphasize the US long-term commitment to enduring partnerships with both Afghanistan and Pakistan," the US embassy in Islamabad said. Grossman's visit came at a time when the arrest of a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) contractor for the killing of two Pakistanis has badly damaged bilateral relations. So far, Pakistan has rejected calls by the US to free Raymond Davis, who Washington says enjoys diplomatic immunity. As a result of the dispute, the United States canceled a tripartite meeting with Pakistan last month which also involved Afghanistan. Reports said the CIA has also suspended contacts with Pakistan's major intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence. Officials said Grossman will discuss the issue of Raymond Davis and will try to remove the mistrust over it during the visit. The US envoy will also visit London and Brussels, to continue close ongoing consultations with NATO leadership, the embassy said. |
