The US Internet discount company Groupon is facing outrage for running a Super Bowl advertisement on Tibet inappropriately to promote the site, AFP reported Monday. The commercial aired during Sunday evening's game, opening with the words, "The people of Tibet are in trouble. Their very culture is in jeopardy." Actor Timothy Hutton then quips, "But they still whip up an amazing fish curry," and he explains how he used Groupon for a discount at a Tibetan restaurant in Chicago. The advertisement set off furious messages on Twitter. "Groupon's Tibet commercial was so appalling it made me cancel their daily e-mail," wrote Tad Friend, a staff writer at The New Yorker. The Huffington Post's poll found that some 45 percent of viewers found the advertisement "inappropriate." Gady Epstein, in his article published on Forbes, said it was a foolish move for the company, which is making a big push into the Chinese market, to poke fun at one of the Asian nation's autonomous regions. Web comments posted on a Chinese political blog include, "Do you want to be the second Google?" and "Want to enter China market now? Dreaming!" Agencies - Global Times |
