A special team of the National Disaster Response Force has already left for the spot. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced 100,000 rupees ($2,000) as compensation for the next of those killed. Also an enquiry by the Crime Branch has already been ordered into the tragedy and a more comprehensive investigation is expected to be announced by the Kerala Cabinet later. An emergency relief of 5,000 rupees for the family of each victim has been announced by the state government. In view of the tragedy, the state government of Kerala has declared a three-day state mourning. Doctors and paramedical staff from the area have also been mobilized in large numbers to the Kumali and Vandiperiyar districts. |
