By Huang Na Six Chinese aid workers were attacked last week by gangsters in Mozambique, who plundered the China National Construction & Agricultural Machinery Corp (CAMC), a Chinese company working on an aid project for Mozambique, according to a statement released Saturday by the Chinese embassy in Maputo. According to the Xinhua News Agency, 20 gangsters armed with knives looted the rice-processing plant of CAMC at Kula Nama town of Zambezia province Thursday night. They broke into the factory, subdued the security guards and robbed the lodging houses and factory warehouses. Six Chinese were attacked and injured. One of them was seriously injured and remained under observation at the hospital over the weekend, the report said. China and Mozambique have established bilateral relations for nearly 35 years. The number of Chinese people working in Mozambique has reached several thousand so far. The bilateral trade volume has reached $200 million. China also helped build important construction projects in Mozambique, such as the Parliament building, a military residence, an international conference center and so on. However, local attacks on Chinese aid workers happen from time to time. On May 23, six militants kid-napped three Chinese engineers for 140 hours before returning them unharmed. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce have emphasized that both Chinese and their foreign counterparts involved in the aid projects must be on alert to protect personnel and property. |
