By Lisa Liu in Tokyo The Chinese embassy in Japan confirmed Wednesday that it was investigating the case of a Chinese national found dead in a police station in Tokyo earlier this month, telling the Global Times that the cause of death was still unknown. The man, Zheng Chengyu, originally from Fujian Province, was arrested November 29 in Tokyo on suspicion of overstaying his visa. A police officer found him dead in the Wangan police station bathroom December 12, hanging from a rope made out of his own shirt. The Chinese embassy in Japan has expressed "dissatisfaction" about the death happening under the watch of Tokyo police and has "serious concerns" regarding the case, according to the Beijing Youth Daily. An official named Kawazu at the Tokyo Wangan police station said the case was still under investigation, with the police believing it was an act of suicide. However, "It (the statement) is not convincing enough," an official at the Chinese embassy in Japan told the Global Times Wednesday. "We still do not know the cause of the death. We have asked Japanese police to provide a detailed report on the incident," he added. |
