The maelstrom surrounding Haiti's presidential election continued as votes were still being counted Monday, just a day after authorities validated the results of Sunday's ballot. The UN mission in Haiti issued a statement late Sunday, expressing its and the international community's "deep concern at the numerous incidents that marred the elections." As Haiti fights a cholera epidemic, the mission to choose the right successor for outgoing President Rene Préval is proving troublesome. Despite several thousand people protesting in the streets for the vote's cancellation, the Provisional Election Council (CEP) late Sunday validated the election in all but 56 of the country's 1,500 polling stations, with CEP president Gaillot Dorsainvil calling the vote "successful." Twelve of 18 presidential candidates denounced a "conspiracy" between Préval's government and the electoral commission. AFP |
