Ontario government Cracking Down on Auto Theft! The vehicle thefts and car jackings are on the rise in recent year. A car is stolen every 48 minutes in Ontario. In Toronto, auto thefts increased 81 per cent from 2014 to 2021.Car theft is not just a property crime, it's also a violent crime that puts our communities at risk. So, our government is fighting auto theft by investing $51 million in new measures to help police identify and dismantle organized crime networks and put thieves behind bars. Attorney General Doug Downey said, “today’s investments will support the creation of dedicated auto theft prosecution teams and enhanced court resources to investigate and prosecute criminal organizations, and ensure justice is served.” This investment will help create Organized Crime Towing and Auto Theft Team led by the OPP and Major Auto Theft Prosecution Response Team. The first team mainly responsible to identify, disrupt, and dismantle organized crime networks participating in vehicle theft. The second team mainly responsible to provide legal and prosecutorial support to the OPP such as court support staff and resources. This investment also includes a new community safety grant to support OPP, municipal police services. This grant will be used for public education and awareness campaigns or technology to assist police with surveillance and identification of stolen vehicles. Additionally, our government on one hand is investing $1.4 million over three years to help stop the illegal export of stolen vehicles and target violent crime linked to criminal organizations. On the other hand, we will continue to target organized crime that fuels gang operations, such as vehicle theft rings, through a further $13.4 million investment this year to reduce guns and gangs’ violence. |
