China's per capita share of grain reaches 483.5 kg: official

(ECNS) -- China's per capita share of grain reached 483.5 kilograms, higher than the internationally recognized security line of 400 kilograms, an official said on Monday.

China's grain output has stayed above 650 million metric tons for seven solid years.

In 2021, the figure hit a new high of 682.85 million metric tons, an increase of 14.12 billion kilograms compared to 2012, Cong Liang, head of the State Grain and Reserves Administration, told a press conference on the sidelines of the ongoing 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

China's farmland totals 128 million hectares, with 70.53 million hectares of food production and important agricultural product protection zones. A total of 60 million hectares of high-standard farmland have been built, with the contribution of agricultural science and technology progress reaching 61 percent.

China's standard warehouses boast 700 million metric tons of grain storage capacity, and the number of emergency-responding grain processing enterprises reaches 6,000, emergency-responding supply sites 5,3000, emergency-responding storage and transportation enterprises 4,199, and emergency distribution centers, 3470.

China can deal with major natural disasters and public emergencies of all kinds, said Cong.

While global food markets were unstable in recent years, China's market has ensured sufficient supply and stable operation, effectively meeting people's needs and contributing to healthy economic development and social stability, Cong said, adding that China will continue to be well-positioned to ensure food security.

"China has guaranteed that its food supply remains firmly in its own hands," he added.
