At least 50 people, including 16 policemen, were injured as unruly students of a private university clashed with police Saturday morning in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka. Police picked up 16 students of World University of Bangladesh in connection with the incident. Police and witnesses were quoted by private news agency UNB as saying over a hundred students of World University of Bangladesh formed human chain on Mirpur Road near Lab Aid Hospital Saturday morning protesting the death of a fellow student in road accident. Mostafizur Rahman, 23, a student of the university, was killed when hit by a pick-up van in front of Lab Aid Hospital while he was crossing the road Friday. As the students put barricade on Mirpur Road in front of Lab Aid Hospital at about 9:00 a.m. local time, police tried to clear the road. At one stage, the agitating students threw brickbats targeting the law enforcers and started damaging vehicles on the road. Police also charged batons on the students. Officer-in-Charge of Dhanmondi police station Shah Alam said 16 policemen were injured in the clash that lasted nearly one hour. More than a dozen vehicles were damaged by the unruly students, he added. |
